What do you envision when you think about flooring?  Do you see nicely aged wood floors with different sized planks, gorgeous natural stone tiles with radiant heating or just a simple stained concrete floor?    All three flooring types have become popular choices.

And speaking of wood flooring, I  love beautiful quartersawn planks that are known for their stability plus the more exotic options available now including African padauk, Bulbinga and Brazilian rosewood for example.

We come a long way since the days of dirt floors and straw thresholds or having to use different size planks because that’s what the tree we cut down yielded haven’t we?  Now the choices are limitless.  We can buy everything from aged wood planking, bamboo grass, cork, rubber, natural stone, man made stones or vinyl that looks like natural pebbles or whatever our imaginations can conceive.

In the future I believe we will continue to show interest in sustainable products as long as they’re beautiful, along with flooring that we can personalize to our taste plus products of higher quality that ultimately are a better value.

Do you ever feel lost when it comes to creating a comfortable inviting cottage style design?  I frequently hear that same comment from new clients who have no idea where to start.

For many people cottage style means a shabby chic style collection of old worn pieces of mismatched furniture and white or light airy colors, but for me the possibilities are much greater.

When I think of cottage style, I picture a warm inviting room that makes me feel like I’ve come home.   So when you’re creating your cottage style room imagine what would make you feel at home and then begin by creating your  own cottage style whether it has the feel of  a beachside cottage, a hunting lodge, a fisherman’s cabin or just grandma’s house.

For me the secret to creating a cottage style design lies in the ability to successfully layer numerous textures in fabrics, rugs, pillows and/or throws in a pleasing color palette, plus knowing which personal collections of yours to  add for a calm relaxed feel.

And to learn more about how to create a cottage comfortable look in your home, tune in this Sunday July 12th at 10am Central on Living Large on News Radio 980 KMBZ (stream live on kmbz.com) as I talk with the queen of cottage style Bunny Williams who has a great book on cottage design along with other experts in design.
