Looking to purchase new furniture for your interior and you’re just not sure where to start? I understand. As a interior designer, my clients often ask me the same question and I recommend space planning first.
If you’re space planning a living area, begin by determining the purpose(s) of your living room and how many people need to be seated. Then take measurements of the walls including openings, doorways or windows and transfer your data to a space planning software program or grid paper if you have it.
Once you have the measurements of your room, just add furniture to your layout using the software program or a furniture template and rearrange until you’ve come up with a solution that doesn’t block doors, openings or traffic flow.
Sounds simple doesn’t it, but actually there’s much more to consider in planning your layout including balance, scale and a focal point among others, so that’s why its often better to have an interior designer help you with an initial floor plan so you can avoid thousands of dollars in costly mistakes.
When purchasing furniture for your living area, the most important investment should be a high quality sofa and usually a solid color bodycloth is best because it will more easily coordinate with future designs or rooms.
