Looking to purchase new furniture for your interior and you’re just not sure where to start?  I understand.  As a interior designer, my clients often ask me the same question and I recommend space planning first.

If you’re space planning a living area, begin by determining the purpose(s) of your living room and how many people need to be seated.    Then take measurements of the walls including openings, doorways or windows and transfer your data to a space planning software program or grid paper if you have it.

Once you have the measurements of your room, just add furniture to your layout using the software program or a furniture template and rearrange until you’ve come up with a solution that doesn’t block doors, openings or traffic flow.

Sounds simple doesn’t it, but actually there’s much more to consider in planning your layout including balance, scale and a focal point among others, so that’s why its often better to have an interior designer help you with an initial floor plan so you can avoid thousands of dollars in costly mistakes.

When purchasing furniture for your living area, the most important investment should be a high quality sofa and usually a solid color bodycloth is best because  it will more easily coordinate with future designs or rooms.

And if you want to learn the latest design trends in furniture or how to repurpose existing pieces, then tune in this Sunday May 17th at 10am Central on Living Large on News Radio 980 KMBZ in Kansas City where I’ll be interviewing ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition designer Tracy Hutson

We’ll also hear furniture tips from Jeff Barnett with Bassett Furniture Direct and if you’re not in Kansas City, just go to kmbz.com to stream the show live on Sunday.
And coming up this Saturday at 10:30am Central on Living Large (Classical 1660 KXTR), I’ll be discussing fabrics in design with top designer and host of PBS Network’s A Moment of Luxury, Bill Stubbs, along with noted designer Carleton Varney of the famous Dorothy Draper & Co design firm.

Fabrics are just fabulous aren’t they?  And I have to admit that I was just overwhelmed with excitement as a little girl each time my grandmother shared with me her latest fabric purchases in her back room that she planned to use for creating dresses or bedding.  I didn’t realize it as a child but I was so fortunate to have a closet full of custom made dresses that were one of a kind.

And speaking of fabrics, this upcoming Sunday at 10am on Living Large design show, we’re discussing fabrics in interior design with one of my favorite southerners, top rated designer Bill Stubbs and host of A Moment of Luxury on PBS network , who’s going to share some of his favorite fabrics for upholstery and window treatments.
