And this spring, I’m ready to live large at home by celebrating the outdoors and all its splendor so I’m going to share a couple of tips for creating a beautiful space outside.

Instead of running out to the nearest nursery or big box store and grabbing the first flowering plants you see, stop and assess your needs first.  Think about what you would like to do in your outdoor space whether its entertaining, relaxing, cooking or just taking a nap.  Then hire a professional to draw up a plan that you can implement now or in stages that will look great all year round and after dark too!

And when selecting colors, don’t forget about the color palette inside and outside your home so you can easily transition your design from indoors to out by coordinating colors, finishes and some architectural style.

For more great tips on outdoor spaces, don’t miss Living Large this Sunday at 10am Central (streams live on kmbz.com) as I talk with DIY Network host Ahmed Hassan along with local experts whose work is pictured above about the latest outdoor trends and how to create a beautiful outdoor area.

Heard some great tips this week on how to make your outdoor living space better from our guests on Living Large design and lifestyle show.  Lorraine Johnson, author of 100 Easy to Grow Native Plants, recommended adding native plants to your landscape like Blue Stem, cone flowers or Blazing Star.

And DIY Network host Gino Panaro suggested “soft pockets of focal points” be created throughout your landscape to add more interest.   Plus Jim Haas recommended a horizontal awning to protect owners of pergolas from summer heat and his wife Susan shared with me that window awnings are making a big comeback on the exterior of homes.   But the awning that I found most impressive could be programmed to move vertically up and down on your window to reduce sun exposure indoors.
