The Story Behind the Transformation of a Historic Highrise at the Country Club Plaza

The first time I entered the Walnuts and was being escorted by the smartly dressed doorman up the elevator, it felt as though I was being transported back to the early 1900s.
And that feeling continued as I wound through narrow dark hallways past a warren of rooms with differing floor and ceiling heights in the space. And when I knew I had a real challenge on my hands, not only because of the current condition of the rooms, but also because of the limitations of the building and the desires of the client. Read on to learn more.
The Kitchen
The biggest challenge was the kitchen, a dark, tiny space that didn’t fit the younger single client’s requirements for an entertaining space. To solve this dilemma, we tore out the wall to the maid’s room at the back of the kitchen to add more natural daylight and much needed space.
The result? The transformation of a dark dated small kitchen to a beautiful sunny kitchen that truly lives large whether entertaining or relaxing.
The Master Bathroom
The master bath was the second biggest challenge because it was cramped, dark, and extremely dated. To solve this problem, I opened up the space by tearing out one wall and expanding the shower all the way to the window to make the bathroom appear larger. By moving the wall, I was able to use the window to bring in more natural light that is reflected back by the mirror in the vanity area. A custom vanity, tile, and paint in lighter colors also reflect light, giving the master bathroom a grander feel that’s light and airy.
